- The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement between the lower 48 states of the United States and the Canadian provinces to simplify the reporting of fuel use by motor carriers that operate in more than one jurisdiction. Commercial vehicles with following characteristics must have an IFTA licence and decals:
- two axles and a gross weight or registered gross weight of more than 11,797 kilograms (26,000 pounds);
- three or more axles (regardless of the weight of the vehicle); or
- be used in combination with another vehicle, resulting in a total gross weight or registered gross weight of more than 11,797 kilograms (26,000 pounds).
